Accelerated Melting of Greenland Ice Sheet Surprises Scientists

The Greenland ice sheet is melting faster than previously thought due to the intrusion of warmer ocean waters beneath the glacier, according to a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The melting at the grounding line, where the ice sheet meets the ocean, is much more extensive than previously estimated, with the highest ice sheet melt rates recorded within the zone of grounding line migration. Incorporating the results of the study into ice sheet modeling could potentially double the projected sea level rise in those models.
