"NASA's Long-Lasting Probe Unveils Breathtaking Moon Views"

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has been circling the moon for 14 years, providing valuable images and data that have transformed our understanding of Earth's celestial neighbor. While the spacecraft's batteries have a limited lifespan, the LRO is expected to remain in good shape for several more years. The LRO has contributed to the discovery of new impact craters, revealed faster-than-expected lunar regolith overturn, and provided data suggesting recent volcanic activity on the moon. It is currently helping identify landing sites for future lunar missions and is funded to operate through September 2025, with a proposal for a sixth extension under consideration. NASA is also studying a post-LRO orbital mission concept called the Lunar Exploration Science Orbiter (LExSO).
