Ancient 6-Million-Year-Old Freshwater Pool Unearthed in Sicilian Mountains

An international team of experts has discovered a vast deposit of ancient freshwater deep beneath the mountains of Sicily, containing 17.3 cubic kilometers of water. The water, trapped 2,400 meters below sea level for around 6 million years, could potentially address the water shortages facing the region. The researchers believe that such unconventional sources of potable water could also be explored in other water-scarce areas along the Mediterranean coastlines.
