The comparison of satellite images over time revealed the formation of a lagoon system along the glacier's barrier, with some of the open water being as salty as the ocean. This indicates that warm ocean water is making contact with the ice, potentially leading to large-scale calving and hastening the glacier's retreat. The satellite photos also show moraines, which are areas where soil and rock have been picked up by the glacier and deposited along its edges. The Malaspina Glacier is the world's largest Piedmont glacier, spanning approximately 1,680 square miles.
