AI Discovers Potentially Hazardous Asteroid

Scientists have used an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm called HelioLinc3D to identify a potentially hazardous asteroid named 2022 SF289. The algorithm analyzed data collected by four Earth-based telescopes as part of the ATLAS system, which continuously searches the sky for near-Earth objects. The discovery marks the first time the HelioLinc3D algorithm has identified a potentially dangerous asteroid. Researchers believe that the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory, equipped with a powerful camera and mirror, will greatly improve the identification process for such asteroids.
