AI System Discovers Supernova Independently, a World First

Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system called Bright Transient Survey Bot (BTSbot) that autonomously detected, confirmed, classified, and announced the discovery of a supernova without human intervention. Using over 1.4 million images, BTSbot trained its machine-learning algorithm to automate the entire star explosion discovery process, eliminating human error and significantly increasing speed. The AI system detected the supernova in data from the Zwicky Transient Facility and confirmed it through communication with other robotic instruments. This breakthrough could streamline large-scale studies of supernovae, allowing astronomers to focus on analyzing observations and developing new hypotheses.
