"Algorithm Uncovers 188 Rare CRISPR Systems in Bacterial Genomes"

Scientists have discovered 188 previously unknown types of CRISPR systems in the genomes of microorganisms using an algorithm called FLSHclust. These new CRISPR systems could potentially open up new avenues for precise gene editing with fewer off-target effects. The researchers experimented with four of the systems and found that two were variants of type I CRISPR systems, which made small, precise cuts in DNA in human cells. Another cluster was a new type of CRISPR, called type VII, which targets RNA and could be useful for RNA editing. Further research is needed to understand how these newfound systems work and their potential applications in gene editing.
