Northern Lights Forecast: Increased Viewing Opportunities This Week

Residents in the Northern Hemisphere may have an increased chance of witnessing the Northern Lights next week as a result of geomagnetic disturbances heading towards Earth. The disturbances, known as Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and a Coronal Hole High Speed Stream (CH HSS), are expected to reach Earth from Sunday through Friday. While the exact strength of the activity is uncertain, NOAA predicts that parts of the globe could reach at least a Level 6 out of 9 on the Kp Index scale. However, values are not expected to exceed a 4, allowing for potential visibility of the lights as far south as the U.S.-Canada border if skies are clear. Cloud cover may hinder viewing, and a Geomagnetic Storm Watch has been issued due to potential interference with communication systems and spacecraft operations. Geomagnetic storms may become more frequent as the sun enters the solar maximum phase of its 11-year cycle.
