Unveiling Hidden Greenhouse Gas Emission Sources from Space

NASA's EMIT instrument, originally designed to map minerals on the Earth's surface, has exceeded expectations by successfully detecting and identifying point-source emissions of greenhouse gases, particularly methane. Since August 2022, over 750 emissions sources have been identified, ranging from small to large, remote to persistent. By pinpointing methane emissions, operators of landfills, agriculture sites, and oil and gas facilities can take action to address them. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and tracking human-caused emissions is crucial for mitigating climate change. EMIT's ability to observe methane plumes from the International Space Station provides a cost-effective and comprehensive approach to monitoring emissions.
