New research indicates that the sun's magnetic field forms much closer to its surface than previously thought, at about 32,000 kilometers deep instead of 209,000 kilometers. This discovery could improve predictions of solar storms, which can affect Earth's power and communications systems. The study, led by Geoffrey Vasil and published in Nature, used new models and NASA supercomputer calculations to reach these findings, though further research is needed for confirmation.
