NASA has selected a proposal for an Agnostic Life Finding (ALF) system, designed to simplify astrobiological studies on Mars before crewed missions arrive, as part of its Innovative Advanced Concept program. The system, proposed by Steven Benner and his team, aims to address challenges in searching for life on Mars, including the need for water access and the potential existence of life in briny patches beneath the surface. The ALF system will be integrated into large-scale water mining operations on Mars to screen for lifeforms and genetic polymers, providing a means to establish a strict lower limit on accessible biomaterial before human presence is established on the planet. This technology could also be used for exploring other celestial bodies in the future.
