As the next major lunar standstill approaches in 2024-25, the moon is at the center of a new space race driven by commercial exploitation and military power, raising concerns about environmental degradation, cultural significance, and the need for responsible lunar exploration. The rush to occupy cislunar space and the moon poses a tradeoff between scientific and security gains and potential permanent loss of geological records, environmental contamination, and desecration of cultural beliefs. With increasing private and governmental space actors, there is a need for intentional precedent to honor humanity's scientific-cultural heritage and develop a sustainable lunar land ethic.
