China Expands Space Station and Develops Advanced Telescope to Rival NASA
China plans to double the size of its space station, Tiangong, to six modules from three, offering an alternative platform for near-Earth missions as the NASA-led International Space Station (ISS) nears the end of its lifespan. The Chinese space station will have an operational lifetime of more than 15 years, hosting a maximum of three astronauts at an orbital altitude of up to 450 kilometers. While Tiangong is still smaller than the ISS, which is expected to be decommissioned after 2030, China aims to become a major space power by that time. However, the European Space Agency (ESA) has shelved plans to participate in Tiangong due to budgetary and political constraints.
