"Close Encounters: Asteroids Flyby Earth in Rare Event"

Asteroid 2023 DZ2, with a diameter between 40 and 90 meters, passed safely by Earth at a distance of 168,300 kilometers. This size of asteroid is in the "city killer" category and gets this close to our planet only about once a decade. The Virtual Telescope Project recorded a timelapse of the asteroid while still a fair bit away from our planet. Although there was no danger of impact, understanding the properties and compositions of these Near-Earth objects is important for protecting ourselves in case of an impact.
