NASA and JAXA are collaborating to launch the world's first wooden satellite, called LignoSat, by 2024. The use of wood as a satellite material aims to make spaceflight more sustainable, as wood does not burn or rot in the vacuum of space and is biodegradable upon reentry into Earth's atmosphere. After successful testing of wood samples aboard the International Space Station, magnolia wood was chosen for its durability. This initiative addresses the growing issue of space debris caused by metal satellites and aims to reduce light pollution and potential threats to other spacecraft and humans.
