JWST Spots Dozens of Newborn Stars in Carina's Treasure Chest

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope captures the Treasure Chest, a cometary globule in the Carina Nebula about 7,500 light-years away, housing roughly 70 newborn stars. The cluster is thought to be about 1.3 million years old (with some estimates as young as 100,000 years), and the most massive member is an O-type star about 19 solar masses. Its shape is sculpted by radiation and winds from nearby Eta Carinae and the Trumpler 16 cluster; over time the surrounding gas and dust will disperse, revealing the stars hiding inside.
