NASA has developed an AI-powered technology called DAGGER, which can predict catastrophic solar storms 30 minutes before they occur. DAGGER collects data from space satellites and ground-based observatories and uses deep learning to recognize patterns around how changes in the Sun and coronal mass ejections can lead to a certain intensity of solar storm on Earth. The model can produce predictions in less than a second and updates every minute. The computer code is open source and can be adopted by power grid operators, satellite controllers, and telecommunications companies to protect their assets and infrastructure from an impending solar storm.
