Venus: A Lost World of Plate Tectonics

A new study suggests that Venus, like Earth, once had active plate tectonics. While Venus currently has a stagnant lid, its thick atmosphere provides clues about its past. By examining the atmospheric contents of Venus, including nitrogen and carbon dioxide, researchers can determine whether Venus had a stagnant or active lid tectonic phase. The study proposes that Venus had an early phase of active plate tectonics that lasted for about one billion years before transitioning to a stagnant lid. This transition may have contributed to the extreme greenhouse effect on Venus, making it inhospitable for surface-dwelling life. However, the possibility of life's vestiges in Venus's atmosphere remains, and future missions will further investigate Venus's history and atmospheric composition.
