Ancient Roman wine cargo uncovered in Sicilian sea wreck

A 2,100-year-old Roman shipwreck near Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, carrying about 500 Dressel 1A amphorae (likely wine) was found at ~46 meters depth. The 21 by 6-meter vessel is deemed a major underwater archaeological find, with scientists set to document its date, origin, and destination and to protect the site, highlighting the Mediterranean’s ancient trade networks and Sicily’s rich underwater heritage.
