Revolutionary Peptide Restores Memory and Mood in Alzheimer's Patients.

Scientists have found that stimulating the Supramammilary nucleus in the hypothalamus can enhance adult-born neurons in the hippocampus of mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease, restoring both cognitive impairments and mood-related disorders associated with Alzheimer’s in the mice. The study suggests that enhancing adult hippocampus neurogenesis (AHN) could be a way to help Alzheimer’s patients achieve symptom relief. The researchers used optogenetics and chemogenetics to enhance adult-born neurons in the Alzheimer’s brains of mice, and found that multi-level enhancement of ABNs is required to achieve their therapeutic benefits in AD brains.

Deep Brain Stimulation Alleviates Alzheimer's Symptoms.

Deep brain stimulation of newborn hippocampal neurons restored both cognitive and non-cognitive function in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. The neurons were modified by deep brain stimulation of the suprammamillary nucleus (SuM), which is located in the hypothalamus. Behavioral improvement in Alzheimer’s mice were seen only when these improved new neurons were activated by chemogenetics. The results suggested that multi-level enhancement of new neurons—enhancement in number, properties, and activity—is required for behavioral restoration in Alzheimer’s brains.
