Southwest Airlines will cap lithium-powered portable chargers at one per passenger, ban charging on board, and forbid stowage in overhead bins starting April 20; travelers must keep the charger on their person or store it in a carry-on under the seat—policy aimed at preventing battery fires as FAA data show rising lithium-battery incidents and recalls from makers like Anker, with international rules already tighter.

A near-collision occurred at Newark Liberty International Airport when an Alaska Airlines 737 on approach to a crossing runway aborted its landing after a FedEx 777 had already been cleared for final approach on the intersecting runway. The Alaska crew executed a go-around, narrowly avoiding a collision by about 300–325 feet. FAA and NTSB investigations are underway; FedEx landed safely. The incident is the second major runway scare at Newark in two weeks, following a separate tail-clipping incident involving a Spirit Airlines jet and a Singapore Airlines flight.

2025 was marked by significant aviation incidents, including deadly crashes and safety investigations, but also saw record-breaking air travel and new security measures like the REAL ID requirement and the removal of shoes-off security policy, amidst ongoing efforts to modernize air traffic control and manage increased holiday travel.
The FAA will reduce flight capacity by 10% in 40 high-traffic areas starting Friday to ease pressure on air traffic controllers working without pay due to the government shutdown, amid rising safety concerns and staffing shortages.
Despite increased flight delays due to staffing shortages during the U.S. government shutdown, aviation experts assure that air travel remains safe, as safety standards are maintained and pilots have the final authority on flight safety. The delays are primarily a result of staffing issues and precautionary measures, not safety risks, although prolonged shutdowns could impact controller performance.
The US is experiencing widespread flight delays due to staffing shortages at air traffic control facilities caused by the government shutdown, which has also threatened small airport services and increased stress on controllers, though officials assure the airspace remains safe.
A potential prolonged US government shutdown could disrupt travel plans by causing longer airport wait times, flight delays, and cancellations, especially as staffing shortages and safety concerns increase. While domestic flights and international border crossings are expected to continue functioning, travelers may experience inconveniences and safety issues if the shutdown persists.
