Houthis Grab Red Sea Coast, Gaining Iran-backed Leverage but Challenging Yemen's Legitimacy
The Houthis rapidly captured Yemen's Red Sea coast, including Mokha and nearby areas, seizing about 2,100 square miles and displacing more than 100,000 people. While many see it as Iran-backed leverage against the US-Saudi bloc, the move also tests Houthi legitimacy by governing newly seized areas without a broad political bargain, raising the risk of renewed Saudi airstrikes and complicating any durable Yemeni settlement.
