NATO Intercepts Russian Long-Range Flight Over Baltic Sea

NATO jets scrambled to intercept two Tu-22M3 strategic bombers and about 10 escort fighters over the Baltic Sea for more than four hours as part of the Baltic air-policing mission, with French Rafales from Lithuania and jets from Sweden, Finland, Poland, Denmark and Romania monitoring the Russian flight. Moscow said the mission was planned and conducted in neutral waters in compliance with international rules. Interceptions on NATO’s eastern flank are routine, and Lithuania reported four scrambles between April 13–19 to address flight-rule violations such as transponder-off or no flight plan.

Increased Tensions: RAF and Russian Jets Engage in Multiple Interceptions.

RAF Typhoon fighters providing Quick Reaction Alert for the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission in Estonia have intercepted 21 Russian aircraft in the last 21 days, including fighter aircraft, VIP and other transport aircraft, intelligence collection aircraft, and long-range bombers. The RAF Typhoons launch to monitor the Russian aircraft when they do not talk to air traffic agencies, making them a flight safety hazard. The NATO Baltic Air Policing mission was established in 2014 after Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea. The RAF will continue to conduct NATO’s Air Policing Mission in Estonia with 1 (F) Sqn Typhoons until August, when they will hand over to the Spanish Air Force.

U.K. and Germany Intercept Russian Aircraft Near NATO Airspace.

The British and German air forces carried out their first joint interception of a Russian aircraft near NATO airspace, intercepting an Il-78 refueling plane near Estonian airspace. The jets were then redirected to intercept a Russian An-148 regional jet airliner that was allegedly flying close to Estonian airspace. The reported interceptions are part of NATO’s Baltic air policing mission that member countries carry out on a four-month rotational basis.
