Bay of Bengal Currents Challenge Century-Old Ocean Theory

A study by scientists from NOAA and other institutions has identified an exception to Ekman's theory of wind-driven ocean currents in the Bay of Bengal, where currents deflect to the left of surface winds, contrary to the theory's predictions for the Northern Hemisphere. This finding, based on multi-year buoy data, suggests potential revisions to climate models and highlights the need for further research on wind impacts on ocean currents. The study could also support the development of a NASA satellite system to monitor wind and ocean surface currents.

Cyclone Michaung wreaks havoc in Chennai, India with severe flooding and rescue operations

Heavy rain and flooding caused by Cyclone Michaung have inundated Chennai, India, with streets waterlogged and the airport temporarily closed. The severe cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall on Tuesday morning, prompting the evacuation of thousands of people from coastal areas. Cyclone Mocha threatens refugee camp and Southeast Asia.

Cyclone Mocha, a very severe cyclonic storm, is expected to hit western Myanmar and Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar, where around 1 million Rohingya refugees live in flimsy shelters. The storm's winds could peak at 220 kph just before making landfall on Sunday morning, with a storm surge of up to 2.5 meters likely to inundate low-lying coastal areas. Aid agencies are ramping up their emergency preparedness and response with local and refugee communities, while residents in coastal areas of Myanmar have started to evacuate their homes and seek shelter.

Cyclone Mocha intensifies, heads towards Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Cyclonic Storm Mocha is expected to make landfall near the Myanmar-Bangladesh border region as a major tropical cyclone and potentially a catastrophic one. The region is known for tropical cyclone mega-disasters, with extraordinary storm surge hitting highly populated areas. The ongoing civil war in Myanmar adds to the risk for large populations. People near the landfall zone and in low-lying areas across the region should be finalizing preparations or evacuations as necessary.
