Germany announced a retroactive electric-vehicle incentive effective from 1 January 2026, offering up to €6,000 for new battery-electric cars (base €3,000; €1,500 for plug-in hybrids), plus family- and income-based top-ups (€500 per child under 18, capped at €1,000; two-tier income supplements €1,000 up to €60k and €2,000 up to €45k). The scheme applies to new registrations from 2026 with a 36-month ownership requirement; applications can be submitted up to one year after registration. A digital application portal is planned for Q2 2026, with BAFA administration not yet confirmed. With a €3 billion Climate Fund, the program aims to fund around 800,000 vehicles over 3–4 years, supporting private buyers and domestic automakers.
BYD sold 382,476 NEVs in May, with record overseas sales reaching 89,047 units, marking a sixth consecutive month of record-breaking overseas sales and a 15.27% year-on-year increase in total NEV sales. Stellantis, the world's fourth largest carmaker, has unveiled its new 'STLA Medium' vehicle platform, the first of four electric-centric bases that will underpin all future models. The platform is designed to support various propulsion configurations and offers a standard range of over 500 kilometers, extendable to 700 kilometers with a performance pack. Stellantis plans to manufacture the platform in multiple countries and has designed it to accommodate future battery chemistries. The company aims to have 100% of its European passenger car sales and 50% of its U.S. passenger car and light-duty truck sales as battery EVs by 2030.
Volkswagen reported a 42% YoY increase in battery electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries, selling 141,000 BEVs in Q1 2023. Europe drove the sales growth, with a 68% increase in BEV sales, accounting for 98,300 units. China was Volkswagen's second-largest BEV market, with 21,500 units delivered, while the US delivered approximately 15,700 BEVs. The ID.Family lineup led the charge, taking first and second place, with the ID.4/ID.5 selling 41,900 units and the ID.3 selling 23,600 units.
A Hyundai Ioniq 5 buyer paid over MSRP for an Essential trim that was marked up but found out that the car has no CCS port and cannot fast charge. The buyer claims they paid CAD54,000 (USD39,478) after the CAD10,000 (USD7,310) rebate was applied, which put it at nearly CAD20,000 (USD14,621) over the MSRP without the rebate. The Essential trim does not come with the 800V architecture and the bigger 77.4 kWh battery like the Preferred Long Range Model. The buyer might have stumbled upon one of the vehicles brought by Hyundai into Canada so it can adhere to the old rebate rules regarding the price limit for new BEVs.
