NASA’s Converted 777 Becomes Next-Gen Flying Lab for Global Weather Studies
NASA's Boeing 777 has returned to Langley after major structural upgrades to become the agency’s next-generation airborne science lab, with dedicated research stations, extensive wiring, enlarged cabin windows, and bottom-fuselage ports for instruments. The aircraft can support 50–100 operators and up to 75,000 pounds of payload for missions up to 18 hours. Its first science mission, NURTURE, is slated for January 2027 to gather detailed atmospheric data on winter weather events across North America, Europe, Greenland, and the Arctic and North Atlantic, building on the DC-8's legacy.
