Global Push to Fast-Track Bundibugyo Ebola Vaccines Amid Insecurity
With no approved vaccine or treatment yet for the Bundibugyo Ebola strain spreading in the DRC and Uganda, about $60 million in emergency funding is aimed at accelerating vaccine candidates (IAVI's rVSV Bundibugyo and Oxford's ChAdOx1 Bundibugyo) and potential treatments (MBP134, Maftivimab, remdesivir), plus a preventive drug trial. Trials are hampered by security issues in the affected region, delaying site setup and testing. Timelines vary from a couple of months to seven–nine months before trials can begin, and operational realities may slow progress despite scientific readiness.
