First human trial begins for Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine

An experimental vaccine targeting the Bundibugro strain of Ebola has entered its first-in-human phase to evaluate safety and immune response. It is one of four Bundibugro vaccines in development; existing Zaire-targeted vaccines do not work against Bundibugro. Oxford-led trials will be followed by a second small Uganda study and a larger efficacy trial in DR Congo. The Serum Institute has produced 600,000 doses if trials succeed. The DR Congo outbreak has over 2,500 confirmed cases and about 1,000 deaths.

Experimental Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine kicks off UK phase 1 trial

The first Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine, ChAdOx1 BDBV, is entering a UK phase 1 trial to test safety and immune response in 50 healthy adults (18–55). Recruitment is underway and vaccinations are imminent. Developed by the University of Oxford’s Oxford Vaccine Group with the Serum Institute of India on the same platform as AstraZeneca’s vaccine, the effort is backed by CEPI, which has supplied doses and funded development; if phase 1 succeeds, CEPI plans late-stage trials for potential emergency approval, as part of a broader global Ebola vaccine effort that includes partnerships with Merck, Moderna, and IAVI.
