New Fast Radio Burst Detected in Massive Dead Galaxy
Astronomers have discovered a new fast radio burst (FRB) source, FRB 20240209A, which has repeated 22 times and is located in an ancient elliptical galaxy 2 billion light-years away. This discovery, made using the CHIME radio telescope, challenges the typical understanding of FRB origins, as it is unlikely to have originated from a magnetar formed by a core-collapse supernova. The FRB's significant offset from the galaxy's center suggests alternative formation mechanisms, such as a white dwarf collapsing into a neutron star. This finding could provide new insights into the nature of FRBs.
