New Fast Radio Burst Detected in Massive Dead Galaxy

Astronomers have discovered a new fast radio burst (FRB) source, FRB 20240209A, which has repeated 22 times and is located in an ancient elliptical galaxy 2 billion light-years away. This discovery, made using the CHIME radio telescope, challenges the typical understanding of FRB origins, as it is unlikely to have originated from a magnetar formed by a core-collapse supernova. The FRB's significant offset from the galaxy's center suggests alternative formation mechanisms, such as a white dwarf collapsing into a neutron star. This finding could provide new insights into the nature of FRBs.

Astronomers Trace Repeating Radio Bursts to Massive Galaxies

Astronomers using the CHIME telescope have discovered a new repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source, designated FRB 20240209A, located in the outskirts of a quiescent elliptical galaxy. This FRB, which has experienced 22 repeating bursts, is notable for its large offset from the host galaxy's center, suggesting a possible origin in a globular cluster. This discovery marks the first association of a repeating FRB with a quiescent galaxy and an elliptical galaxy.

Astronomers detect record number of repeating radio bursts from outer space, sparking alien theories.

Canadian astronomers have detected thousands of deep space radio signals, including 50 from repeating sources, using the high-powered CHIME telescope in British Columbia. The signals, known as fast radio bursts (FRBs), are considered one of the biggest mysteries in astronomy and are confirmed to have come from outside the Milky Way galaxy. Recent research has discovered that some of the FRBs were not random signal emissions and may be connected to one another. The CHIME telescope has an edge over other telescopes in discovering FRBs and has led to an increased rate of interception from a few tens to thousands in recent years.
