Manganese Catalyst Breakthrough Enables Durable CO2-to-Formate Conversion

Researchers from Yale and the University of Missouri report that manganese-based catalysts can efficiently convert atmospheric CO2 into formate, a potential hydrogen carrier for fuel cells. The key advance is stabilizing the Mn catalysts by incorporating an additional donor atom into the ligand (hemilabile, pincer-like design), dramatically extending catalyst lifetimes and outperforming many precious-metal systems. This low-cost, durable approach to CO2 utilization could be broadly applicable to other catalytic transformations and supports sustainable hydrogen storage strategies.

"Revolutionary Technology Converts CO2 and Plastic Waste into Clean Fuel"

Researchers from the University of Cambridge have developed a solar-powered reactor that converts captured CO2 and plastic waste into sustainable fuels and other valuable chemical products. The technology can capture CO2 from industrial processes or directly from the air and convert it into sustainable fuel. The researchers are currently working on a bench-top demonstrator device with improved efficiency and practicality to highlight the benefits of coupling direct air capture with CO2 utilization as a path to a zero-carbon future.
