State probes second Chicago funeral facility for mishandling remains
A second Chicago facility, Bohemian National Cemetery and Crematorium, is accused of mishandling human remains and has been ordered to stop accepting new remains as investigators probe storage violations. An Illinois Comptroller’s office check after a July tip found equipment failures and remains not kept at proper temperatures; 35 people were awaiting cremation at the time, all later cremated and returned to families. Separately, regulators reported 57 decomposing bodies at South Chicago Chapel, triggering a criminal investigation by Calumet Area detectives; the cemetery is cooperating with the ongoing probe.
