Filament-Filled View Reveals Crescent Nebula in Detail

Astrophotographer Kevin Boardman spent about 16 hours across five nights using narrowband imaging (H-alpha and [O III]) to capture the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888/Caldwell 27) around Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 in Cygnus, a roughly 4,700-light-year-distant 25-light-year shell formed from the star’s outward material as it evolves toward a red giant. The detailed image, taken with a ZWO ASI533MC Pro and processed in PixInsight, reveals intricate gas filaments invisible to the naked eye and highlights the star’s eventual fate as a supernova in about 100,000 years.
