Fervo’s Enhanced Geothermal Push Aims to Power the Data Center Boom
Fervo Energy is commercializing enhanced geothermal systems at Cape Station in Milford, Utah, by drilling deep wells and fracturing rock to create artificial reservoirs that heat water into electricity. The project could deliver emissions-free baseload power for data centers, with Google contracting roughly 1 GW and Fervo targeting rapid cost reductions (Phase I: 33 MW; Phase II: 50 MW) and long-term costs near $3,000 per kW. The company plans both grid-connected and behind-the-meter deployments as it expands across the Western U.S., leveraging oil-and-gas drilling tech and Forge research to drive scale and lower construction times.
