Experts outline the best window to get your flu shot this fall
As fall arrives in the United States, experts say everyone 6 months and older should get a flu shot now, with the ideal window typically September to October and no later than November, since it takes about two weeks to become effective. Last season’s vaccines prevented about 10 million illnesses. A new Moderna mRNA flu vaccine (mFLUSIVA) for adults 50+ may be available but access could be limited. Flu vaccines remain free for many with health insurance, and those at higher risk—children under five, pregnant people, immunocompromised individuals, and seniors 65+—should get vaccinated. The CDC has not yet released 2026 guidance, but it is expected to be similar to last year, and Covid vaccines are also being updated as part of ongoing vaccination efforts.
