China’s coal-to-electricity breakthrough: zero-emission direct electrochemical fuel cell

Chinese researchers led by Xie Heping have developed a zero-carbon-emission direct coal fuel cell (ZC-DCFC) that converts coal’s chemical energy directly into electricity without combustion. The coal is processed and fed to an anode while oxygen is supplied at the cathode; a oxide membrane enables direct oxidation and on-site CO2 capture, which can be turned into synthesis gas or stabilized as bicarbonate. This bypasses steam cycles and turbines, aiming for higher theoretical efficiency by avoiding combustion losses and Carnot limits. Improvements in durability and stack scalability address earlier power-density issues. The concept could even operate underground at deep coal seams, transmitting only electricity upward, potentially easing supply pressures as shallow reserves dwindle.

Bloom Energy Climbs as Oracle Expands AI-Cloud Infrastructure Pact

Bloom Energy shares moved higher in after-hours trading after the company announced an expanded strategic partnership with Oracle to support its AI and cloud infrastructure, with Oracle planning to procure up to 2.8 gigawatts of Bloom’s fuel-cell systems under a master services agreement (an initial 1.2 GW already contracted); deployment is underway and expected to continue into next year, with Bloom’s Aman Joshi calling the expanded relationship a step toward a shared vision for energy and AI infrastructure. BE was up about 9.7% after hours to around $193.93.

"Breakthrough: Endless Power Generation from Dirt with New Fuel Cell Technology"

Scientists at Northwestern University have developed a new type of fuel cell that can generate essentially endless electricity from dirt by harnessing the power of microbes living in the soil. This dirt-fueled power source could potentially replace lithium batteries, which pose environmental and human rights concerns. The microbial fuel cells have been shown to power sensors in farming and IoT devices, and the technology could provide a sustainable alternative to traditional batteries, as long as there is organic carbon in the soil for the microbes to break down.

"Hyundai Nexo 2026: Paving the Way for a Fuel Cell Future"

Hyundai announced at CES the development of two new hydrogen production processes, Waste-to-Hydrogen and Plastic-to-Hydrogen, and confirmed the release of the next-generation Nexo fuel-cell SUV in 2025. The new Nexo, influenced by the Tucson and Hyundai Ioniq 7 electric SUV, is expected to feature improved fuel cell specifications, including an increased range of 497 miles. Despite being a small segment, the Nexo currently dominates the hydrogen SUV market, with Hyundai addressing concerns about the scarcity of refueling stations for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Iveco acquires full ownership of Nikola venture for electric and hydrogen trucks.

Iveco Group is set to acquire full ownership of its joint venture with US start-up Nikola, which develops battery electric and fuel cell heavy-duty trucks. The deal will have a €44m ($48m) one-off impact on Iveco's Q1 income statement, which it expects to absorb through cash flow generation without changing its cash flow target for this year. As part of the agreement, Iveco will focus on Europe for the further development and commercialisation of its own battery electric and fuel cell electric trucks, while Nikola will concentrate its operations in North America.

Simultaneous Hydrogen Production and Water Purification Method Discovered

University of Alberta researchers have discovered a new catalyst that can produce hydrogen and purify water simultaneously. The catalyst is made with non-toxic and plentiful materials, making it an affordable and accessible alternative to current catalysts on the market. It can be used with any type of water, making it an edge over current ways to generate hydrogen. The researchers are initially looking to craft off-grid devices that could help remote communities or aid in disaster relief.
