Space AI Goes Live: Prithvi Becomes First Geospatial Model in Orbit

NASA and IBM’s open-source Prithvi geospatial AI foundation model was uploaded to two in-orbit platforms—the Kanyini satellite and the ISS-mounted IMAGINE payload—making it the first geospatial foundation model deployed in space. Trained on 13 years of Landsat/Sentinel-2 data, Prithvi demonstrated flood and burn-scar detection and can be updated on orbit with small decoder packages, enabling faster Earth observation analyses and potential natural-language interactions with onboard instruments in the future.

Pokémon GO Players Help Train Niantic's New Geospatial AI

Niantic has announced plans to develop a Large Geospatial Model (LGM) using data collected from Pokémon GO players' PokéStop scans. This AI model aims to help computers understand and navigate the physical world by integrating billions of images and location scans. The LGM will combine local models to create comprehensive 3D images of structures, enhancing navigation and spatial understanding. Niantic's existing Visual Positioning System (VPS) has already mapped 10 million locations, but the LGM requires significantly more data to be fully realized.
