IMF Warns of Global Financial Instability from AI Bubble and Record Debt
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a stark warning that global financial stability is at risk due to a combination of soaring government debt, an artificial intelligence (AI) investment bubble, and potential cyber threats. In its latest Global Financial Stability Report, released during the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, the organization identified these three factors as 'plausible near-term catalysts' for market turmoil. The IMF highlighted that the 'magnificent seven' tech giants now account for over 35% of the S&P 500, up from 12% a decade ago, with valuations rising by more than 50% in two years. Simultaneously, global public debt is approaching 100% of GDP, nearing World War II levels. The report warns that a correction in AI asset prices could trigger a global crisis, exacerbated by 'circular financing' arrangements and high leverage among hedge funds and hyperscalers.
