Naica’s Giant Crystals: A breathtaking underground fortress that tests human limits
In 2000, miners in the Naica mine near Chihuahua uncovered a vast chamber filled with giant gypsum crystals, some beams taller than 11 meters. The chamber’s extreme heat (up to 58°C) and nearly saturated humidity forced researchers to work in cooling gear, with typical exposure limited to minutes. Crystal growth is extraordinarily slow; at 55°C the rate suggests hundreds of thousands to about a million years per metre, with isotopic ages spanning hundreds of thousands to roughly 500,000 years depending on methods. The space was kept dry by pumping water until a 2015 flood ended those efforts, and access remains contingent on mine operations. A controversial, peer-review-status revival of dormant microbes from crystal inclusions has not yet undergone full peer review. The Naica site, however, offers a rare natural laboratory for extreme Earth environments and analogues for subsurface life on other worlds.
