IEA Warns Diesel Shortage Will Persist Until Mid-2027 Despite Russian Deal

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that global diesel supply constraints will continue through the second half of 2027, driven by severe inventory depletion and weak demand elasticity. Although refinery output is recovering, the loss of 1.3 million barrels per day from Russia and the Middle East has not been fully offset by other sources. Wholesale prices have hit record highs, exceeding $220 per barrel in Europe and the US, while retail prices in the US reached $6 per gallon in September. The IEA noted that a recent deal between the US and Russia for 300,000 metric tons of diesel is unlikely to have significant macroeconomic impact, as the volumes are too small to address the broader deficit. Renewed attacks in the Gulf, including strikes on Saudi Aramco facilities, further threaten the fragile recovery of oil supply.

"Renewable Energy Capacity Surges, World on Track to Triple Renewables by 2030"

The world added 50% more renewable energy capacity in 2023 than in 2022, with solar accounting for 75% of the additions, putting it on track to achieve the goal of tripling global capacity by 2030 set at COP28. The International Energy Agency's report shows that global renewable power capacity is expected to grow to 7,300 GW over the 2023-28 period, with renewables overtaking coal as the largest source of global electricity generation by early 2025. However, further efforts are needed to meet the COP28 goals, and success will depend on scaling up financing for emerging and developing economies.

Oil prices struggle amidst economic uncertainty and demand concerns.

Oil prices have fallen below $70 for West Texas Intermediate and below $74 for Brent due to concerns over the US debt default and uneven reopening in China. Congress needs to agree on a higher debt ceiling as soon as possible, as the state's coffers will run out by June 1st. The market is looking out for potential demand revisions in this month's IEA report. Since the start of the year, oil has lost some 13%, and traders have accumulated the largest short position on the commodity since July 2021.
