China is rapidly expanding data centre infrastructure in Inner Mongolia to fuel its AI ambitions, positioning itself as a global leader in open-source models and computing power despite US chip restrictions.
A team of Chinese geologists unexpectedly recovered a 115-million-year-old dinosaur fossil from a drill core during a copper mineral survey in western Inner Mongolia. The specimen, cataloged as 208GPV01, was found at a depth of 473 meters in the Yin’gen-Ejinaqi Basin. It consists of tail vertebrae, a sacral rib, and ossified tendons, belonging to the plant-eating Ornithischia group. While geometric morphometric analysis suggests close resemblance to Psittacosaurus, the limited material prevents specific genus or species classification. This find marks the first published dinosaur record from the western section of the Bayan Gobi Formation, expanding the known geographic range of Early Cretaceous dinosaur fossils in this region.
Six university students from Northeastern University in China drowned after falling into a flotation tank at a mine in Inner Mongolia during a visit, highlighting ongoing mine safety concerns in China despite recent safety measures. The accident occurred during a technical upgrade at the mine, and the incident has sparked social media discussions and calls for improved safety protocols.
China's Inner Mongolia has reported two cases of bubonic plague, following a previous infection detected on August 7. The two new cases are the husband and daughter of the previous patient. All close contacts have been quarantined and are currently asymptomatic. Bubonic plague, a highly infectious disease primarily spread by rodents, is relatively rare in China, with most cases occurring in Inner Mongolia and the northwestern Ningxia region in recent years.

The National Meteorological Center renewed a blue alert for sandstorms and forecast that more than a dozen regions, including major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, would see some areas affected by floating sand and dust on Thursday. The public should take precautionary measures to guard against poor air quality.
