Sen. Oliver protests Tennessee redistricting with song and banner
During a Tennessee Senate special session to redraw the congressional map, Sen. Charlane Oliver disrupted proceedings, climbed onto a desk and unfurled a white banner reading Jim Crow 2.0 while singing Lift Every Voice and Sing to oppose a plan that would crack Memphis’s majority-Black district; Republicans pushed the map through 25–5 despite Democratic opposition, drawing about 1.4 million Tennesseans into a new district as critics warn the move follows the Supreme Court ruling Louisiana v. Callais that restricts race-based redistricting, with early voting looming in about 70 days.
