Bay Area E. coli outbreak tied to The Kebab Shop prompts health alert
State health officials are investigating an E. coli outbreak linked to The Kebab Shop chain in the Bay Area, with nine California residents infected between March 27 and April 30, 2026. The strain can produce a Shiga toxin and cause diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting, and abdominal cramps. The Kebab Shop paused sales of grilled beef kofta on May 18 and is cooperating with investigators. Current information indicates the implicated beef product was distributed only to The Kebab Shop; exposure is not ongoing. Most people recover within a week, and there have been no deaths.
