While the consumer spending is still strong, there are cracks in the firewall, such as higher delinquencies in the credit card market and on auto loans in the sub-prime credit space. The Great Recession had a more pronounced launch, with institutional failures in the financial sector, while things are much murkier today.

Impending Recession Threatens Stock Markets and Investors' Confidence.

Chris Watling, CEO of Longview Economics, has warned that a recession is coming and investors should prepare for pain in the stock market. He cited the "brutally bad" leading economic indicators and the typical timeline for a recession after the inversion of the Treasury yield curve. The IMF, however, has suggested that the US economy could avoid a recession due to the recent strength of the labor market and consumer spending. Watling also believes that earnings expectations are "way too optimistic" and the stock market will have to contend with the normalization of profit margins and pricing in a recession.
