Spain’s PM’s wife ordered to stand trial for corruption
A Spanish judge ordered Begoña Gómez, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, to stand trial on corruption charges, ban her from leaving Spain, surrender her passport and report to court twice a month; the allegations relate to her work at Madrid’s Complutense University and are for influence peddling and embezzlement. Gómez denies wrongdoing, while Sánchez says the move is political persecution and judicial overreach; several Sánchez associates are also under investigation, and no trial date has been set.
