UN Security Council Deadlock Leaves Western Sahara Peacekeeping Mission on Brink of Shutdown
The UN Security Council failed to renew the mandate for the MINURSO peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara after competing US and Russian proposals were blocked. The US-backed draft, which would have renamed the mission and centered Morocco’s autonomy plan, was vetoed by Russia despite 11 votes in favor. Russia’s alternative, which sought to extend the existing mandate without changes, failed to secure the necessary nine votes. With the mandate expiring on October 31, the mission faces an uncertain future, raising concerns about security and stability in the disputed territory.
