Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) announced the capture of a modern, unmanned US submarine in the Strait of Hormuz on September 8, 2026. The IRGC described the seizure as a complex intelligence operation and promised to release video evidence. The US has not yet commented. This incident occurs amid a months-long blockade of the strait by Tehran and a counter-blockade by Washington.
Iran has issued explicit threats against vessels in Bahrain and Kuwait following recent US strikes on Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island. This escalation follows a series of retaliatory actions by US forces targeting Iranian maritime assets after Iranian missiles were fired at US Navy ships. The situation marks a significant intensification of the ongoing conflict in the Persian Gulf, with Tehran signaling broader regional implications for its adversaries and their allies.
US forces struck multiple Iranian tankers near Kharg Island and Jask in retaliation for Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attempts to attack US Navy vessels. The strikes, part of a six-month conflict, have intensified tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where 20% of global oil flows. Iran threatened to target tankers in Kuwait and Bahrain, while the US imposed new sanctions on Iranian aviation.
President Donald Trump suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz to the 'Trump Strait' via Truth Social, claiming US control over the waterway. This follows a recent executive order renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America.' The proposal occurs as the US and Israel resume military strikes against Iran, which has retaliated with attacks on regional bases and shipping. While the US asserts oil exports are rising, independent trackers report transits remain far below pre-war levels.
Iran's IRGC says it has closed the Strait of Hormuz after a vessel diverted onto an unauthorised route and was struck, warning of a severe response; the US then launched a third round of strikes on Iran to deter attacks on civilian ships. A Cyprus-flagged container ship was damaged and a crew member is missing, with UKMTO reporting another incident near Oman. Diplomats in Oman discussed safe passage for ships, while Iran's leadership vowed revenge and the US warned of heavy costs. The incident underscores escalating tensions with unclear consequences for shipping through the Hormuz Strait.
Sri Lanka, sticking to neutrality, allowed the Iranian auxiliary ship IRINS Bushehr to dock and take its 208 crew into Colombo after the IRIS Dena was torpedoed, with the vessel placed in Sri Lanka’s EEZ. The move tests Colombo’s ties with Iran while balancing potential backlash from the United States and Israel and grappling with possible economic fallout as oil prices rise and rescue efforts for missing sailors continue.
Ukraine's navy reported that a missile attack struck a Russian naval reconnaissance vessel and a large landing warship captured from Kyiv during the annexation of Crimea in 2014. The strike, which hit the Konstantin Olshansky landing ship with a Neptune anti-ship missile, rendered the vessel non-combat capable. This attack is part of a series of blows suffered by Russia's Black Sea Fleet as Ukraine targets warships and submarines with naval drones and missiles, impacting Russia's ability to project power in the region. The conflict in the Black Sea is crucial for Ukraine's efforts to secure its export corridor despite Russian attempts to impose a de-facto sea blockade.
Russia claims to have thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack on Russian civilian transport ships in the Black Sea, a key trade route for both countries. The Defense Ministry stated that Ukrainian semi-submersible naval drones attempted a "terrorist attack," but were destroyed by Russian patrol boats and warplanes. This incident marks a significant escalation in naval tensions between the two countries, which have been treating ships bound for each other's ports as potential carriers of military cargo since last year.
Yemen's Houthi militia, backed by Iran, has threatened to continue attacks on US and British warships in the Red Sea in response to perceived aggression against Yemen. The ongoing conflict has led to disruptions in global trade, with shipping companies avoiding the area and opting for longer, costlier routes. The US and UK have retaliated against Houthi targets, and the EU plans to launch its own Red Sea naval mission amid concerns about extended shipping disruptions.
Moscow claims that a Russian fighter jet destroyed a Ukrainian military "reconnaissance boat" near Russian gas infrastructure in the Black Sea. Attacks between Russia and Ukraine have escalated in the region since Russia withdrew from a deal allowing for the safe export of Ukrainian grain. The Russian Defense Ministry also reported downing two Ukrainian drones over the Black Sea, while a Russian tanker was damaged in a Ukrainian drone attack in the Kerch Strait.
Ukraine claims to have destroyed three "subversive Russian boats" in the south of the country, while civilian ships are reportedly fleeing the area of the Black Sea where Ukraine is targeting Moscow's assets. The Black Sea has become a hotspot in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with Ukraine focusing on Russia's Black Sea fleet bases and infrastructure. Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports have increased since Moscow's refusal to renew a U.N.-brokered grain deal. Ukraine has established a "humanitarian corridor" to allow stuck civilian ships to leave the region. The Ukrainian navy reports that Russia has five ships on combat duty in the Black Sea, one of which carries sea-launch Kalibr cruise missiles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns that Russia may lose its ships if it continues to attack Ukrainian ports. Ukraine has retaliated with sea drones, inflicting damage on Russian vessels. Despite Russia's superior naval power, Ukraine's exploding naval drones pose a growing threat. Zelenskyy asserts Ukraine's right to import and export goods through the Black Sea, which Russia is blockading. The recent escalation in attacks on Ukrainian ports has resulted in civilian casualties and strained international relations.
The situation in the Black Sea has worsened as Ukraine declared Russian ports as war-risk areas and attacked a Russian tanker, leading to international shipowners avoiding the area. Russia's withdrawal from a UN-backed grain export deal sparked a chain of events, including strikes on Ukrainian grain facilities and ports, and the re-deployment of sea mines. Ukraine responded by declaring dangerous and prohibited navigation areas. While both countries depend on Black Sea exports, the attacks have put marine insurers on edge. The tense situation is likely to tighten vessel supply availability as shipowners avoid the Black Sea altogether, potentially leading to disruptions in crude oil exports and higher freight premiums.
The US has warned that Russia may attack civilian ships in the Black Sea and blame Ukraine for the aggression. The warning comes after Russia targeted the port city of Odesa with missiles and drones, destroying agricultural infrastructure and 60,000 tons of grain. The White House official cited newly declassified intelligence and Russia's release of a video showing the destruction of an alleged Ukrainian sea mine as evidence of a coordinated effort to justify attacks on civilian ships. Russia has also declared that all vessels sailing to Ukrainian ports will be considered potential carriers of military cargo. Ukraine is establishing a temporary shipping route via Romania to unblock international shipping in the northwestern part of the Black Sea.
Beijing accuses the Philippines of staging a near-collision in the disputed South China Sea for the benefit of journalists, calling it a "premeditated provocation" designed to make China look bad. The incident occurred near the Second Thomas Shoal, a day after the Chinese Foreign Minister's visit to Manila. The captain of the Philippine coast guard ship claims he had to take evasive action to avoid a collision with a much larger Chinese ship.
