Alejandro G. Iñárritu's 'Digger' has suffered a sharp decline in 2027 Oscar predictions and faces a weak box office debut, exacerbating Warner Bros.' poor 2026 performance. The film's polarizing reception has forced the studio to pivot its marketing strategy, while Cruise's promotional efforts attempt to salvage the project's commercial viability.
The 2026 fall festival season has crystallized the 2027 Oscar race, with 'La Bola Negra' and 'Wild Horse Nine' emerging as top contenders. 'The Odyssey' remains the Best Picture favorite, while Julianne Moore leads the Best Actress race. The TIFF People's Choice Award's historical correlation with Best Picture nominations suggests a wide-open field, though 'Wild Horse Nine' and 'The Debut' missed the podium.
Venice 2026 opens with a notable absence of big Oscar contenders: titles pundits hoped would launch the awards race (including The Social Reckoning, Cliff Booth, and Dune: Part Three) aren’t on the lineup due to reshoots, VFX, and marketing choices. Digger was kept off the festival, and several others may pivot to Telluride or NYFF. The festival still features strong auteur work, but the lack of marquee Oscar films has analysts buzzing about Venice’s grip on the awards season, with only Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine seen as a clear Oscar contender this year and room for a surprise later in the season.
Early critics are raving about Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, praising its epic scale, breathtaking set pieces, and surprising horror influences, with a star-studded cast led by Matt Damon. Comparisons to Lord of the Rings and talk of best-picture potential accompany notes of Nolan’s longest-held ambition finally realized, as the film hits 70mm/IMAX theaters on July 17 and tickets sell out in advance.
At Cannes 2026, Fjord won the Palme d’Or, extending Neon’s seven-film winning streak and boosting the title as an early Best Picture contender for the 2027 Oscars thanks to Cristian Mungiu’s cross-border move and a cast led by Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan. Neon’s track record suggests Cannes titles can translate into Oscar momentum, even as the festival featured few American entries and a slate of international, awards-friendly titles (All of a Sudden, Fatherland, Paper Tiger). The result signals a more global, indie-led Oscar race next year as the Academy broadens its voting pool.

The article maps likely country submissions under the Academy’s new rules (Germany’s Fatherland, Spain’s The Black Ball, Belgium’s Coward, Japan’s All of a Sudden, and Russia/France’s Minotaur) and flags Neon’s Paper Tiger and Jordan Firstman’s Club Kid as strong contenders, signaling a broader, more international Oscar race.
