BGR highlights five affordable digital accessories, each priced under $50, that are designed to attach to keychains. These items include a high-capacity power bank, a retro-style digital camera, a programmable mini game console, a voice recorder, and a Bluetooth tracker. The selection prioritizes compact size, utility, and value, with all products receiving at least a 4/5 rating on Amazon.
Researchers have developed layered multicolor metalenses using stacked metamaterials that can focus multiple wavelengths simultaneously, overcoming the limitations of single-layer lenses. This innovative design is easy to manufacture, polarization insensitive, and scalable, with potential applications in compact, high-performance optical devices for drones, smartphones, and other portable technologies.
The Anbernic RG28XX is a compact and portable emulation handheld that excels in portability and ease of use, despite its small controls and less-than-ideal screen brightness. It performs well with most retro consoles, though it lacks an analogue stick for N64 and Dreamcast games. Priced at around $60, it's a solid choice for newcomers to emulation handhelds.
The Teenage Engineering TP-7 Field Recorder offers a unique and fun recording experience with clever functions like the ability to play audio backward and mix and match inputs and outputs. However, it can be tricky to navigate and has some idiosyncrasies, such as requiring two button presses to start recording. While it may not be the most intuitive or professional recorder, it provides a good time and flexibility for creative audio manipulation.
A new wave of personal cooling devices is hitting the market, offering portable solutions to beat the heat. With the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves, these devices aim to provide individuals with a way to stay cool on the go. From wearable cooling vests to handheld misting fans, these portable devices utilize innovative cooling technologies to provide relief during hot summer days.
The European Parliament has approved a law that requires portable batteries in appliances to be "readily removable and replaceable" by consumers. This means that in a few years, any phone sold in Europe will have to be designed so that its battery can be replaced by the person who owns it. The interpretation of "readily removable and replaceable" is still up for debate, but this move could extend the longevity of devices and bring back easily replaceable phone batteries.
MIT researchers have used 3D printing to create a miniaturized peristaltic vacuum pump that could be a key component of a portable mass spectrometer. The pump, which is about the size of a human fist, can create and maintain a vacuum that has an order of magnitude lower pressure than a dry, rough pump, which doesn’t require liquid to create a vacuum and can operate at atmospheric pressure. The researchers’ unique design, which can be printed in one pass on a multimaterial 3D printer, prevents fluid or gas from leaking while minimizing heat from friction during the pumping process. This increases the lifetime of the device, making it ideal for use in remote areas or on Mars.
