China Expands Permanent Coast Guard Footprint East of Taiwan
The PRC has established a near-permanent coast guard presence east of Taiwan with continuous patrols, law-enforcement traffic checks, and regular scientific surveys in the PRC-claimed EEZ, complemented by naval drills and undersea research. Framed as defending Beijing’s maritime claims, the move signals a long-term effort to erode Taiwan’s customary rights and pre-position for a possible blockade or quarantine, prompting Taiwan and its partners to enhance surveillance, legal countermeasures, and joint coast guard activities to deter expansion.
