Unprecedented Retreat of Hektoria Glacier Signals Rapid Antarctic Change

NASA's Earth Observatory documents an unusually rapid retreat of Hektoria Glacier on the eastern Antarctic Peninsula, with about 25 km of length lost between 2022 and 2023 (including an 8 km burst), driven by its ice-plain geometry that allows seawater to destabilize the bed and trigger buoyancy-driven calving; the event underscores how even smaller glaciers can contribute to sea level rise, and upcoming missions like NISAR and SWOT will help monitor such rapid changes.

"Unveiling the Hidden History: Ancient Indigenous Communities Concealed in the Amazon Rainforest, Reveals Study"

A new study utilizing remote sensing technology and advanced statistical modeling estimates that the Amazon rainforest may contain over 10,000 records of pre-Columbian earthworks, constructed by Indigenous communities prior to the arrival of Europeans. The study identified 24 previously unknown archaeological sites in Brazil using LiDAR technology, which allows for the detailed investigation of terrain beneath the forest canopy. These earthworks, dating back 1,500 to 500 years ago, provide evidence of Indigenous occupations and landscape modifications throughout the Amazon. The research highlights the need to protect Indigenous territories and recognizes their ancestral relationship with the forest.
